What was inside however was excellent. I think Microsoft took a leave out of Apple's book. It was packaged and designed I think anyway, with white and visually beautiful aesthetics and packaging. It looks a very professional package, which should be the case given the cost of this unit.

The Package
=========

The box comes with:
-Console
-Mini remote
-HUGE power adapter
-Live headset
-Wireless controller
-Manuals
-AV component cables

I should add that the power brick is very large, Microsoft in order to make the main unit be slimmer than its predecessor, put all the high power components in a large housing. This unit has two small fans inside which are hardly audible.

Setup
====
Microsoft recommends that the unit and the power adapter be placed in a well ventilated area. I would heed this warning. The Xbox 360 gets hot, very hot!

ALSO, I believe Microsoft made a large design flaw. The console looks best standing up, that is clear. However the main air intake is through some grated mesh (very much like the apple G5 metal) on the bottom of the console. If the console is lying flat then this intake is on the right and is not blocked. When vertical, the intake is on the floor with only 2mm of rubber feet between the intake and your carpet or wooden floor. Thus the unit gets hot very quickly. How Microsoft didn't change that beats me. So I would suggest keeping your console on its side.

After connecting the cables and the unit to the TV, upon turning on, you are greeted with the main Xbox 360 dashboard.

The noise of the console in dashboard mode is okay, there are what looks like 2 5cm> fans at the rear which are always on. However when you are playing a 360 game this noise goes up greatly. All my friends upon entering the room with a game playing have commented on it. I have to say it is loud. Even with this amount of fans and drives spinning, the Xbox gets very hot quickly but I have had no lockups at all.

Xbox Dashboard
============
Microsoft has perfected this. Gone now is the black and green monstrosity that existed with the first Xbox, now replaced a beautiful dashboard based on blades. Very much like filing labels, move right or left on the controller and a new page whooshes across the screen. There are the following pages:- Xbox Live
- Games
- Media
- System

On the Xbox live page you can see your gametag and profile. Xbox 360 uses a gamescore points system which you build up playing games on and off line. You can see your rep rating. This is based on feedback from other users. From here you can also go to the Xbox Live Market Place.

On the Games page, you can see your achievements to date. New 360 games have a feature called achievements which means that friends can see what parts of a game you have unlocked etc. You can launch demos and play live arcade games from here (more on this later).

On the Media page, you can browse images, music and videos from the hard drive or on other computers on the network (if they have the Xbox 360 connect software installed).

The final System page allows you to enter the settings such as network settings, default game settings (this is excellent - no more changing inverted y-axis again in each game!)

Xbox Live Marketplace
=================
This is revolutionary. From here you can download new levels for your games, or trailers or even Demos!!! No more buying Xbox magazines. These demos however are large. For example I downloaded Need for Speed 1 GB!! So a good broadband connection is recommended.

Microsoft has however got a little greedy I feel, they have introduced gametag pictures very much like MSN display pictures. You have a choice of free ones but they try and plug ones which you buy.

One great feature is the ability to download free arcade games such as the online fav bejewelled. These are superb mini games which you can play when you're fed up fragging like mad on perfect dark.

Media Capabilities
=============
On the Xbox 360 you can store images, video and music on the HDD. You can also browse this content on other pcs. I have windows media centre 2005 installed on my pc and stream these across. It is great, allowing wireless access to my pc upstairs content such as movies and pictures in my main living room. What I wanted for so long from the original Xbox which was only available if it was chipped.

While I believe the Xbox 360 offers excellent access to media (2 USB ports also available), I believe Microsoft have made the BIGGEST ever mistake in only providing 20GB of HDD and using standard DVD technology.

The 20 GB you get is only 13 GB out of the box!!!!!!!!!! This is not acceptable also imagine 1GB demos; it doesn't take a genius to see that space will become an issue very very quickly. Also with only 9 GB per disc, how can developers take advantage of the new gfx with textures when there is no place to store them, only on multiple discs? There are already rumours of 3 discs for some games!!!

I'm afraid to say Sony has got it right with Blu-Ray. I know some of you will think I'm some Sony fan-boy, whatever. I love my Xbox 1 and my Xbox 360, I think Microsoft have got it spot on with Xbox live and I doubt Sony will ever match that. That is why I chose the 360 but you have to agree the technical limitations with storage will be the 360's Achilles heal.

Swiftly moving on…

The Performance
============
Well I can only comment on the games I have:

-Call of Duty 2
-Perfect Dark Zero
-Project gotham racing 3

I have to say the graphics on the 360 with a proper next gen game are truly awesome. PGR3 is out of this world especially on HDTV. It is so amazing I find it hard to keep my mind focused on driving and not looking at the circuit, the cars etc The reflections are live like, people on the side of the track are plentiful and well presented. It is hard to describe in words the awe factor unless you actually see it for yourself. The Xbox 360 anti-aliasing works to full effect, I have never seen (apart from v v high end pcs) such aliasing. The draw distance on the games is far greater compared with the first console.

The three core architecture comes into full swing on Call of Duty 2. I have to saw this is by far the best game of the 3 above; it is out of this world. The Xbox 360 can handle the graphics and they shear chaotic gameplay with hundreds and I mean hundred of people fighting on the beaches without a single frame rate drop. Truly next generation.

Textures are now so much richer. Walk beside a wall or on tiles and you will see life like images. No more blurring to remove jagged edges, this looks real. Of course some games were rushed such as PDZ. This is a title which I feel could have been handled on the original Xbox if some of the bump mapping was removed.

In all the graphics are next gen. I wonder what the PS3 will be like in comparison but for the time being Microsoft have the lead.

DVD playback
===========
The xbox 360 has improved dvd playback compared with that on the original console. For a start you can play them without having to buy a remote. The image quality is excellent with fill On-Screen Menus which are semi transparent. It looks very well presented. You can scan through the movies at various speeds which is a welcomed feature. The noise level drops when playing a dvd, I assume the console enters into a lower runtime state using less power. If you have the remote control then it offers for the first time a proper opportunity to replace your old dvd player (if you have one) with this console.

Xbox Live
========
For those of you who have used the original Xbox with live, you'll how revolutionary it was. Online gaming with voice, team based matches with people in the USA, Europe playing your favourite games. Well now it has got even better.

Migrating your old live account to the 360 only involves:

- Going to xbox.com and creating a game profile tagged to your game tag
- Typing in your passport email address on the 360, password and gametag

Then it is fully migrated. Easy.

The main live button is the Xbox 360 logo on the controllers. On pressing this, a blade comes from the left hand side of the screen. From here you can see your friends, invite them to have private chats, invite to games etc. You can see their game cards which show their gamescore, achievements etc.

All in all it is a great package. Lag remains the key issue. I have hardly experienced any but it really is down to game specifics. Remember pro evo 5 on Xbox 1???

You can have 32 player matches on Call of Duty 2 which is out of this world. So you can play with your friends across the UK on the same team and play versus another team or just join in as a single player into death matches etc. For those of you on PC's, you really have to see how well Microsoft does online gaming. Global stats which follow you and integrate in every part of offline games. That isn't even available to PC gamers.

You can even have alerts sent to your friends on MSN messenger when you are online and send requests to them to play. Integration encapsulated.

Summary
=======
I believe the Xbox 360 has improved a good deal over its predecessor. The graphics are amazing, the media capabilities are very nice and useful I might add. Live support is now the foundation of each game. That said if you do not have broadband connection and live, there will be many features of this console not open to you such as demos and trailers from the marketplace. The console looks better but is not that much smaller than the first. It is definitely louder too. Plus I believe the lack of storage and the use of DVDs will haunt Microsoft in 2 years time. This console must last 4 years, how dated will DVDs be then when Sony and Toshiba are using Blue ray and HD-DVDs which will allow game developers to exploit fully the console.

However even with all that said, I am very pleased with my 360 experience. The console is a joy to play, it hasn't once failed or locked up and it provides an amazing gaming experience. IT has been well worth the wait.

Nintendo Wii

When I bought my original PlayStation I got the console and a demo disk. When I bought my Nintendo Wii I got the console and a full free game. What sounds like the better deal to you? Not since the Sega Master System II have I seen a better console/free included game combination that wasn\'t some special offer or launch deal. (By that I mean no matter when you buy the product you\'ll get this game/console combo)

I\'ve been keeping a watchful eye on these next generation consoles for a long time now; first out the stable gate was the XBOX 360 from Microsoft and then came along the PlayStation 3 and the Wii. I won\'t lie when I say that the XBOX 360 has an awful lot going for it but I was drawn to the Wii for a number of reasons:

Nintendo doesn\'t charge to use it\'s internet services, (unlike XBOX Live for instance)
The Wii went against the going trend and uses a \'Wii-mote\' and Nunchuk control system, rather than a standard controller. (I\'ll go through this in more detail below)
The Wii plays host to some very imaginative games and even when some games exist on other systems, the use of the innovative control system adds a whole new realm of interaction.
Virtual Console

Let\'s go into the details a little farther now shall we?

First Impressions
-------------------------
Quite honestly I was gob smacked when I opened my boxed Wii for the first time, (I say first time.. no I wasnt silly enough to re-box it and open it again for kicks but it was something I considered...). Nintendo definitely put a nod in Apple\'s direction in terms of the unboxing of the console - You have two trays which hold different parts and each item is seperately wrapped which allows you to truely focus upon each component in absolute awe. When I unwrapped the Wii console itself I was amazed at the sheer style and size of the unit. I had always known the Wii was small and compact but seeing it was truely believing it. Three DVD\'s stacked together produced more thickness than the console and because of this, it fits snugly down the side of my widescreen television.

Setting up the Nintendo Wii
-------------------------
Setting up new hardware is something I thoroughly enjoy being a self confessed geek and IT Administrator by profession. Although with someone of my experience with computers would put some bias on the ease of setup, I had my fiancee with me and she understood everything without one hitch right away. I was hooking up my Wii to a SCART socket and did so as the first step. I then took the Sensor Bar (which is what picks up on the movement of your controllers) and placed that on top of my TV. (According to the manual you can place this bar beneath your TV should it be more suitable there; you just need to make sure you calibrate the Wii to recognise the rough positioning of the bar. This ensures maximum accurate sensitivity.)

Thirdly, I inserted the 2xAA batteries which came in the box to my Wii-mote (the remote controlled shaped controller) and was ready to roll. I switched my TV on, pressed the power button on the front of my Wii and waited. After a very short pause a safety warning from my Wii appeared and I was asked to press the A button to continue. It was at this point I noticed I had to synchronize my controller before it would work. (I didn\'t read every guide supplied from start to finish! hehe) You carry this out by doing two things simultaneously. First, you remove the battery cover of the Wii-mote and press the recessed sync button hidden inside. With only a short delay, you need to press the same shaped button located behind the SD Card slot cover on the front of your Wii. Seconds later everything ready to rock and roll.

Here you can name your Wii, calibrate the location of the sensor bar and then you enter the Channel Menu! This is the main Wii menu.

The Wii Channels
-------------------------
Whenever you switch your Nintendo Wii on from now on, you\'ll come to the Wii Channel Menu. Everything you do from launching a game, to browsing the web and checking your \"Wii-mail\" (as I dub it) is carried out from here. Luckily, the Wii Channel Menu is an absolute doddle to use. You use your wireless Wii-mote to point an arrow around your screen and use the large A button to confirm selections. Imagine left clicking a button with your mouse on your computer - it\'s the same sort of thing.Each Wii comes with a set of default Channels which you cannot remove; although why you\'d want to is anyones guess. These are as follows:

Game Channel - This is where you launch your games from. The Wii can accept both Wii and GameCube disks.

Mii Channel - It is from within the Mii Channel that you can create small animated characters of yourself or all the potential Wii players in the home. Or, by using the simple to handle design interface, you can create animated Mii-versions of celebrities or well known characters. Once you add friends to your Wii\' s address book (and as long as sharing settings are setup) your friends Mii\'s will slowly begin to appear on your Mii Channel. These will turn up whilst you play many games which adds a hint of personalisation to the whole experience.

Wii Shop Channel - The Wii Shop lets you download brand new Wii Channels (as they become available) and old classic games from the Virtual Console. I shall save the Virtual Console for below but I will say that all purchasing for the Wii Shop is done by using a currency called Wii Points. Wii Points are bought using either a credit card over your Wii or by purchasing cards in many retailers and electronic stores.

Internet Channel - The Internet Channel does NOT come as standard on Wii consoles, but can be downloaded through the Wii Shop Channel. Unfortunately since the 1st July 2007 all those who have not yet got this channel must now buy it. (It was free up until the date above.) The Internet Channel is a fully featured web browser designed for the Wii by Opera, (who also make a good desktop browser for Windows on your PC.) You can navigate using your Wii-mote and I frequently use the integrated flash player to watch YouTube right on my widescreen TV.

Weather Channel - Does exactly what it says on the tin but with a cool feature in the guise of a 3D spinning globe which you can control and manipulate. Spin the globe, zoom in and out and view the weater all over the world.

News Channel - Arguably one of the more useful channels on the Wii, the News Channel displays news articles from both your home country and from all over the world. You get the same Globe feature which is present in the Weather Channel for looking around for news but an extra feature is what I cal the Headline view. With this enabled, your TV will fill up with a globe rotating on its own and headlines of news coming up on your screen in large text. It only takes a click on the Wii-mote to pause the Headline view and to view the article in full text.

Everyone Votes Channel - This is another channel which doesn\'t come on the Wii as standard but (as of writing) is a free down loadable channel from the Wii Shop Channel. The Everyone Votes channel is very much a one trick pony but fun to poke around in every now and then. You pick some active polls and move your Mii\'s around to select your choices. You can also try and predict what you reckon the final outcome will be and if you like you can come back later and see if you were right.

Photo Channel - This is another fairly useful channel but with a couple of annoying limitations which may end up frustrating you. Using the SD Card slot in your Wii you can insert camera cards from your Digital Camera and view the images on your TV. Use the supplied (basic) editor to add effects, draw on lines and images and then you can export your edited creations to your Wii Message Board. Sadly, although you CAN email another friends Wii with your edited picture, you CANNOT email the picture to an email address or to your own computer.

Wii Message Board
-------------------------
The Wii comes with a clever message system called the Wii Message Board and how this works is very easy and straightforward. By clicking the small icon in the lower bottom right of the Wii Channel Menu, the Channels vanish from sight and in their place appear three fairly chunky icons; Memo, Email and Address Book

Memo - Quite simply a way to store short memos on the board for you to read later or so members of your family can know about something or be reminded of a date/time

Email - Send yourself email, another Wii some \"Wii-mail\" or send some friends a message or three. To to this however you must have their credentials in your Address Book (See below).

Address Book - To send anything to anyone, (including your own computer or another Wii in your home,) you\'ll need to add that person\'s Wii or email address to your Address Book. Once this is done (and it\'s a very simple process to add people) you can message away until your hearts content.

The Blue Glow
-------------------------
A quick point to mention and that\'s the blue glowing light around the disk slot loading drive. You can use this to signify a number of events but mostly its used to alert you to new content on your Message Board or perhaps a System Update. You can configure the initial brightness of the glow... or even turn it off should you desire.

WiiConnect24 / Internet / Wireless Connectivity
-------------------------
Becuase of how this section\'s been written, I\'ve combined all three sub-titles into one section, (quite simply as I\'ll cover all these areas right here.)

WiiConnect24 is the official name given to the set of technologies which allow online gaming and some various services provided by Nintendo (and third parties) to communicate and function. A great benefit of WiiConnect24 is that it\'s free and there are no subscription fees to pay for. Your Wii simply connects to your existing Wireless Network using its integrated Wireless card and utilizes the current internet connection in your home. Should you NOT have a Wireless network then don\'t panic. You can purchase additional kit from Nintendo to have it share the internet connection of your desktop or laptop or if you have a Ethernet (cabled) network, then there is an adapter you can buy to get it all hooked up.

Setting up a wireless connection is an absolute cinch on the Wii should your network be discoverable but mine is not. I\'m an absolute nut on security and as a result I hide my wireless network from being discovered through simple scanning. I heard from a friend prior to buying a Wii that you MUST make your network discoverable in order to get it connected but this simply isn\'t true. As long as you have a little technical knowledge, you can skip the automatic scan and manually enter ALL your network information. This is what I did and it worked a treat.

My Wii asked to check for a System Update when I first connected and it promptly did so and downloaded an update. The update process was seem less and very easy to do. So easy in fact you needn\'t do anything.

Wii-Mote / Nunchuk / Control System
-------------------------
This was pretty much THE puling factor for me when deciding to purchase a Nintendo Wii. Nearly every games console to date has used the conventional two hands controller style interface which has worked well across most genres - however one genre I always thought didn\'t work so well was with games like Call of Duty, Halo etc. You know the ones I mean - the ones with guns that require pin point accuracy in a split second. I could never quite get to grips with moving a crosshair with a PS2 or XBOX Analogue stick. Hence I always bought my first person shooter games for the PC (where I could use the mouse)

The Wii-mote has changed all of that for me as you quite simply use IT as the gun. It comes almost instantly natural to you and before you know it you\'ll be holding the Wii-mote up in front of you shooting opponents and swiping to reload or use alternate weapons. (Of course it will vary on game to game but Resident Evil 4 works in this way). You move your character using the Nunchuk and the Wii-mote as your controller. What an excellent way to move around in-game!

The Wii-mote also works in variously different ways. In Wii Sports Bowling for example, you swing the Wii-mote back and forward just like you were bowling for real. In Wii Sports Golf you hold the Wii-mote like golf club and swing, as I said, just like you would in real life. One of the most fun games in Wii Sports must be Boxing. This is where you use the Nunchuk in one hand your Wii-mote in the other to \'box\' your opponent. You can physically move around, duck and dive and your on screen Mii will move with you, ducking punches and slamming right hooks that you delivery with your dual controller setup. It\'s fantastic, amazing and very engrossing fun that everyone should enjoy.

GameCube / Backwards Compatibility
-------------------------
Prior to the Nintendo Wii, I had a GameCube with three GameCube controllers. Unfortunately as of late my GameCube ended up in my office and not hooked up to the TV and although I longed to play some of my old library now and again, it didn\'t feel like it warranted the trouble of finding all the cables and hooking it back up again. Becuase the Wii can play GameCube games, my love was restored and playing GameCube games on my next gen console is a great move. You can plug your existing GameCube controllers in to the top of the Wii and theres even two memory card slots too.

Virtual Console
-------------------------
Another pulling factor for me was quite simply this. For a few measly pound coins, I could be downloading some rather excellent classics and have pretty much instant access to them immediately. The library consists of well known games across the NES, SNES, Mega Drive and couple of other systems too. Not every game is there at the moment but the collection is expanding nearly every day. Prices vary according to system, (for example a NES game can cost around £4 where an N64 game can be £7). I\'ve downloaded two Virtual Console games - Streets of Rage 2 from the Mega Drive and Super Mario 64 from the N64 and both play brilliantly well on the Wii.

Every Virtual Console title you download gets its own Channel on the Wii Channel Menu which makes access all the easier. One important thing to note however is how to play these games. While some of them allow you to use the Wii-mote on its side as a conventional style \"classic controller\", most require you to purchase the Wii Classic Controller. Thing is though, should you own a GameCube controller then plug this in as the Virtual Console supports these too. Playing Super Mario 64 on the extremely comfortable GameCube controller is an absolute joy!

Backing Up / Saving / Transferring Content
-------------------------
You\'ll be pleased and sad to hear this first bit regarding downloaded games and content from the Shop. EVERYTHING you buy is tied down to the Wii, NOT the user or account holder. Should you wish to trade in your Wii or get rid of it, you\'ll need to wipe the content too as it\'s still yours. The good news though is should you reset your Wii\'s memory (therefore wiping all saved and downloaded content) you can get it recovered.

The Virtual Console games for example can be copied to SD Cards for safe keeping. Should your consoles memory be wiped for whatever reason, then it only takes a quick insert of the SD Card to copy back everything you put on in the first place.

Saved data from games is also done in this way; although your Wii-Mote can save upto ten Mii characters for taking to your friends houses to play head to head with them. Do you remember the old ways of transporting your memory card to your mates\' just to play as you? Well download your Mii character(s) to your Wii-mote and simply take the Wii-mote with you. Games that support the Mii\'s will give you the option to load in a Mii from your Wii-mote.

The Bad, Negative Side to the Wii
-------------------------
As with everything, you come across negatives and I\'ll be listing a few of the ones I\'ve either come across, experienced first hand or know exist. This list comes in no particular order, except on how I remember them:

The Wii-mote EATS batteries

You can get about 12 hours of continuous gaming from 2xAA batteries. Sadly if you\'re a hard core gamer this won\'t last long. As I write this though you can buy third party accessories that allow you to put rechargable batteries in the Wii-motes - some even come with a docking station to charge when not in use.

Graphics are not everything, but they do help
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
With the Wii being a next gen console, you\'d expect the graphics to be a little more up to date then they already are. Both the XBOX 360 and the PlayStation 3 have jaw dropping visuals whereas the Wii is more of an improvement over the old GameCube and PlayStation 2 graphics. Of course the visuals are not always everything but still... it does add to the game.

The Wii cannot play DVD\'s

This is a VERY minor gripe as you did buy the Wii to play GAMES on - Still, the fact it can handle DVD size disks means it would have been a lovely feature should it have been able to play DVD\'s. Never mind eh :)

You cannot connect your WIi to a laptop or computer to stream media
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Yes I know it\'s NOT a Media Center but with all that great networking connectivity and the ability to handle photos and music (yes it will play MP3\'s if they are present on your SD Card when placed inside the console), you\'d think a little connection with your hardware would have been nice to see. (Of course this WOULD increase the product price I suppose)

Sensor Bar cable is VERY flimsy
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Be careful with the cable which connects the Sensor Bar to your Wii. Although in the majority of cases it will be out of sight (and most likely reach), to me one moderate yank would snap this cable and leave your Wii unplayable.

ADDICTIVE
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
The Wii is very addictive for hard core, casual and new gamers alike. My fiancee reckoned she\'d never play the Wii...ever! I catch her on it most nights, playing some bowling or Tennis, surfing the web through the Internet Channel and just this night she had bought an old classic GameCube game for a few quid to play.

MY FINAL THOUGHTS
-------------------------
The Nintendo Wii is quite simply out of this world. The control system works so well that it really must be tried to be believed. Words don\'t cut how good it is. The systems interface - the channels, the wireless control with the Wii-mote etc - is slick and easy to use. The selection of Wii games is fairly healthy at the moment but it\'s still very much early days and more titles are scheduled for release extremey soon. There\'s pretty much something for everyone with this machine. I used to be a hard core gamer but now thanks to a new job, new responsibilities and the running of an indie software development group, I now call myself a fairly casual gamer. Because of this I held off machines like the XBOX 360 but the Wii had so many things about it which appealed to me. Not just me though, but hard core gamers, new gamers, young and old.

Sure the Wii-motes eat batteries and there are a few other niggles worth keeping in mind, it\'s not enough (in my view) to mar your enjoyment. If you enjoy playing games, fancy something new or fancy experimening with this, I strongly recommend that you buy a Nintendo Wii. This is one of those rare times in which I don\'t believe I could say \"This isn\'t for you\"

Those are the basic specifications, I could go on about the ATI Radeon™ and the Enhanced pre boot security but I won't. Suffice it to say that I have never had a serious problem with it, or even many minor ones. Anyway from the point of view of a student who needs a large hard drive for his music library, decent gaming ability and ease of use for work it seems ideal.

Price and Other Buying Matters
Well, you can see the various options and the best price up to the left, however I'm reviewing my particular laptop which I bought from a reputable distributor (not sure if I'm allowed to give the name) for £379.98 which I thought was a pretty cushy price as it came with a year's drop in warranty. When I looked on ciao I was a bit bummed to see that I could have saved a good 80 quid if I'd have paid attention to the 'cheapest offer' box in the review so let that be a lesson to you all :-)Basic Use
I bought mine because I was having problems with my old desktop, I hadn't cared for it enough and it was starting to get difficult to use not to mention old with viruses popping up. Having had my new laptop since the beginning of November it seems that it may be impossible to let it get that bad even if I wanted to, there's a whole heap of security and ease of use features (follow the link at the end of the review for full specs) which mean that using the computer can be as easy as using a toaster. This can be a problem for some people; Vista had a lot of computer whiz's usually pallid faces red with anger at it's over the top ease of use and this can be especially bad with HP laptops which have their own such software. But I found that the more irritating ones (like the pop-ups that ask you if you're sure every time you run a program) can be turned off so it's not so bad. At the end of the day the software can be fairly easily altered to suit all skills except maybe at the very top level and it is also available with Vista® Business operating system if that suits.

The processor, RAM and hard drive can all easily cover any kind of eventuality or need that might arise in everyday use, you can store huge amounts on the hard disk and the processor and memory are great for gaming as well as the epic needs of Windows Vista itself. The bandwidth of wireless that the system can handle means great surfing prospects, if you're away from home (like me) and want to see and chat to your family (unlike me :-P ) there is an inbuilt web cam and microphone, if that's not enough for you there are four USB ports for anything else you may need.

All work … (Business use)
Software wise, there is the usual Windows-fodder, as well as this the system comes with a test version of Microsoft Office®. Which basically means you can use it for free for 60 days, then if you still want it you can shell out 283 Euros (?!?) to carry on using it or otherwise delete it. Of course you workaholics will know that hard labour often means sitting in front of your PC for long periods of time, believe it or not I've done this a bit and I'd say that it is worth investing in a USB laptop mouse as it makes everything much easier. I would warn you, if you're sat in front of your PC while on the go with your USB mouse at your side you may well encounter the other big problem with this system: battery life, three hours is kind of middle of the road which would be OK … if the thing actually had three hours battery life which in my experience it doesn't, not even close at about one hour. If you're a jet-setter and used to working in business class on the redeye then this may not be the laptop for you. As I've already said there are no shortage of USB ports and the system is pretty much network ready, there are three different security modes for personal, public and business networks respectively. In fact security is one of the strong points of the laptop and you can have it as stringent or as open as you want.

… and No Play … (Gaming)
So you want to be blown away by awesome graphics, highly synchronised sound and an alien with an improbably sized rocket launcher? For those familiar with graphics cards the one in this system is an ATI Radeon™ HD 3200, which is a very decent card. Its not top of the range but then powerful modern graphics cards can often be very expensive. On the other hand its far from dull, I know from experience that it can run games like Quake Wars and Oblivion at high graphics setting. For you graphics card familiar peeps: Its got a core and shader speed of 500MHz and up to 512Mbs of memory (shared with RAM), for you less familiar peeps that means it's pretty good but it does take away from your 4Gbs of memory rather than running separate. The sound card produces high quality, crystal clear sound which I personally choose to amplify through separate speakers rather than use the less than amazing on-board ones. For those who like to play on-line the large bandwidth will come in useful, the computer is network ready so you can start brutally slaughtering your friends almost from day one.

...Make Jack a Dull Boy, or not in the case of this laptop (The Summary)
Compared to my previous PC I'm incredibly happy about this laptop, the ideal description of which seems to be sleek. It looks sleek with it's shiny black finish, the functionality is sleek and it's so easy to use it could be a games console. My only complaints would be the inbuilt touchpad and the battery life which in real terms is only about an hour or so despite what HP claim. For it's price it excels in almost every area and I cant think that I've ever been left wanting in any serious way. It's highly recommended for students looking for a decent laptop, particularly if you like to keep it reasonably simple, if you go in for the more intense IT functionality best steer clear but otherwise go for it.

Ok I recently bought an iPod Touch to replace my old iPod Nano because my Nano's batteries were beginning to die. I played around with the Touch a couple of times at the Apple store and I have to say, it's one of the coolest mp3 (or is it an mp4?) players ever. I finally got one around the last week of December at Best Buy and I'm completely happy with the Touch. It's simply magnificent. The only complaints I have about the item are kind of minuscule overall but would definitely make the iPod Touch better.

The iPod Touch features a beautiful 3.5 inch screen where you basically do all the navigating with your fingers. The brightness of the screen can be adjusted which is nice. The greatest thing about the Touch is its ease of use. Scrolling and zooming in all make sense and you just somehow know how t o use it when you pick it up. Plus navigating the Touch is so much easier than using the dial of a normal iPod. The Touch obviously plays music which you put onto the device via iTunes. The Touch also allows you to put videos onto it. Also you can download podcasts to the Touch. This stuff is pretty standard for any iPod. All these features are accessed through the touch screen which for the most part is pretty responsive.

The 3 other main new features of this iPod are safari (web browsing), Youtube, and the iTunes store. These 3 features appear as icons on the home page for easy access. Safari is pretty self explanatory. If you use a Mac, Safari is Apple's web browsing software (I think; I use a PC). It's pretty convenient to take a easy to use web browsing software with you anywhere you go. The Touch uses wifi so you'll need to be in a hotspot to use it, but most places is/are/will go wireless as wireless is the future. So basically wherever you go, you'll most likely encounter a place with wifi. One of the only "negatives" about the safari program is the virtual keyboard. The virtual keyboard is a full qwerty keyboard that appears on the screen and you tap that part of the screen for the desired letter, number, or symbol. It takes getting used to and even then you'll still click symbols you didn't want to. I think it's better than the annoying phone keypad but it doesn't replace a real keyboard. Safari works but can be a bit slow sometimes and it doesn't support flash which is kind of lame as you can't watch videos on safari but safari is free so it's not that bad. The youtube application allows you to view youtube videos. Youtube has an extensive video library so this is a nice app. Everything you can do on youtube.com you can do in this app. The video does take a little longer to load than on the computer but it works. In order to access this application, you'll need to be in a wifi hotspot. the iTunes store is basically the iTunes store on the Touch. You can buy music, but you can't buy videos or subscribe to podcasts. I guess if you're dying to get a song and aren't near a computer this program (it's not really an app) would be pretty convenient but I haven't used this much. To use this feature you again need to be in a wifi hotspot. There are a couple other applications like a calculator, calender, and stopwatch but those are kind of useless (you can't add events to the calender). This leads me to one of the biggest negatives about the Touch. You can get other apps via apple.com but those are all online apps (more like bookmarked web pages on safari). You'll have to be near a hotspot to use them. I really want to just download apps straight to the iPod itself. In order to do that however, you have to jailbreak the Touch. You download some program and it jailbreaks the iPod. However if you choose to do this you're warranty is immediately canceled. Best Buy's crappy 3 year warranty which I regrettably bought was 60 USD doesn't even allow me to replace the item if I accidentally break it. If you want to get the most of the Touch, don't buy a warranty, be extra careful with the device, and jailbreak it.

The next gripe I have about the iPod is its capacity. At 16 (actually less; more like 14.8) GB, its capacity pales in comparison to the classic iPod. This iPod could easily replace the classic if it had even half the capacity of the classic iPod. Songs aren't big but movies are. This leads me into another minor complaint about the Touch. My old Nano (which was 2 GB) could be used as an external hard drive. The Touch is read by the computer as a camera (!?!?!?! WTF? it doesn't even have a camera) and not as a memory device. I don't get it. It would've been nice to use the Touch as a memory device as I could easily move stuff around among computers.

So more memory, allow the Touch to be used as a memory device, and allow downloadable applications are pretty big negatives. I will say the biggest flaw is a design decision. The back of the iPhone was like a gray piece of plastic. For the Touch, Apple decided to use the shiny mirror back they use for basically all iPods. I absolutely hate this back. It cries "FINGERPRINT AND SCRATCH ME" to me and I hate getting fingerprints and scratches on it (the Touch doesn't come with any sort of case and my Touch already has a few scratches on it...) Buy a case off of ebay (which I did) or something and protect it. Also the headphones that come with the Touch are not as good other headphones but these are so much better (in sound quality and style) than Apple's old headphones. They work well and in my opinion don't need to be replaced.

Overall, the iPod Touch functions marvelously. It's an amazing piece of technology as we go from button pressing to touching. The amazingness and range of its function outweigh its somewhat low memory capacity and annoying backside. Allowing it to download real applications and using it as memory device would be nice, but you buy an iPod to listen to music and maybe watch a couple of videos on those long trips (battery life varies depending on what you're doing). As such this device works well. Browsing the internet on the Touch is what separates it from other iPod models. It functions as it's supposed to and ANY negatives people say about it is about them wanting more than what they're getting. If you're looking to get an iPod Touch consider the steep, steep 350-400 USD pricetag (amazon.com has really good prices compared to elsewhere). I mean that's how much my xbox 360 was. If you know you're not going to watch videos, what's preventing you from getting a Shuffle? If you have an iPhone why are you reading this? As a sleek innovative device I think the Touch is completely worth it. You get almost all your entertainment needs in a neat, sexy package that has an amazing screen that rivals if not beats that of the PSP's. The price is asking a lot but all things considered, I think all the other iPod models don't compare to this one. Apple can't make everyone happy but they sure made me happy.

If the sound dock can boast one thing it is ease of use this is because a technical moron could turn it on and have I working in under a minuet, there is no difficulty in the set up and no complicated wires to negotiate, with; this can be the case with other sound docks or speakers. All you have to do is chose the appropriate dock thing (sorry for the lack of specification but it is very obvious and there are only two to choose between two and they are clearly labelled so it is very easy (please just trust me)). The hole set up process took less than 5 minuets. During music playback you have to do nothing (except adjust the volume) which is great. On some speakers you have to adjust the Base and the Treble (on some more complicated systems the subwoofers and the tweakers etc …) on the Bose it is all done for you, admitably you cannot raise the base so much that the windows start to rattle but that kind of fun has a time limit and it is very short. ======================================~Quality Of Sound~

As you probably know Bose are already notorious for their superior sound quality and their extremely high standards; and the sound dock is no exception, even though it is a relatively small system it can fill a room even when it is only at half volume and it is the perfect thing to use for a shop or even at the gym. At full volume the thing is absolutely deafening and in general you cannot stay in the same room, and it will easily fill your whole house with music. The great thing about the Bose Sound dock is that even when it is at its highest volumes there is never any noticeable change in sound quality which is uncommon with most other speakers, and it is certainly better than any of the other sound dock systems that are on the market.

The remote

This is a kind of random point, and it is that the remote whilst brilliant in design and light weight, it is only about the seize of a credit card which is great because that is what you want in a remote. The problem with it is that it is remarkably easy to lose and if you do lose it, Bose do not do a replacement (although if I am wrong please feel free to correct me and possibly tell me were I can get one because I have lost mine!) which means that you have to get up and change it manually which is really annoying after a while.

This is a bit of a problem, by this I mean there is really only one use for it ( as a sound dock for your 20gig, 30 gig etc ipod.) that is fine but, I can't help but think how nice it would be if I could plug my sound dock into my computer and that if I had bought I a different set of speakers, PC speakers for example it would have been cheaper and could have enjoyed them whilst I watching a DVD or when I was gaming (admitably I don't do that very often). Considering the amount of money the sound dock cost you really should be able to plug it into another devise other than an ipod, but as far as I am aware there is no way to plug it into a PC etc and it put me of it (the sound dock) for a considerable amount of time, and should be an area of considerable thought before buying the actual product. ======================================

Advice/ Conclusion
============================================
The sound dock is an impressive piece of kit and it seriously worth having especially is you own a shop/ café/ gym/ or another type of small business and you cannot afford/ just don't want to buy a bigger and much more expensive sound system that Bose and some other companies specialise in, but you still want to provide music for your customers without having to spend a fortune, then a sound dock is a seriously good buy. If you feel that you don't use your ipod enough, then the sound dock is a great idea you can put it in the lounge or in the dining room and use it whilst reading and it is great for parties. I have found it to be an immense buy.

I have had this camera now for about 2 weeks, having been recommended it by my local camera shop (price £159). We probably should have searched for the cheapest available online - but I do like personal service and will pay for it.

Available in Black or Silver and with an ultra high quality 12.1 mega pixel CCD lens, this is one camera that is more than ample for our 'family outings' and yet has so many features, I am sure would keep a professional photographer happy.

The screen is approx 2 and a half inches across, and easy to view and internally, it has a 12 GB memory, which holds a huge array of (upto 4000x3000 pixel) photos.

There are a wide arrange of settings allowing video, scene settings to try and look your best, or can be switched to auto to let nature take its course...

It comes with a USB and HD attachment, and can be plugged directly into our television for easy (and immediate viewing to keep the kids happy!)

We are delighted with it, and perhaps if you shop around should pick up a bargain on ebay or amazon

November 11, 2006: This is when it debut in Japan
November 17, 2006: It released in North America
March 23, 2007: Finally was released in Europe, Australia, the Middle East, Africa and New Zealand.

The UK launch was a shock for who went to it, as it was announced that everyone in the queue would receive a 46" Sony Bravia TV worth £2000.

The launches did not turn out great for Sony as initial figures were low, here are the figures below:

Worldwide: 5.59 Million - Japan 1,341,000 - North America 2,105,500 - Other 1,300,000

The launch was initially supposed to be as follows:
November 11th for Japan and November 17th for North America and Europe

But it was delayed due to shortages of diodes used in the Blu-ray Disc drive.

I myself baught it on the same week of launch but i feel i should have waited as all the games i wanted to purchase like Tekken, GTA, GT HD, PES2008 were a long way off. Games that ive wanted have only started comming out Novermver time so i feel i could have saved a lot of money. But i do not regret buying it as it helped me get familiar with the system and it forced me to try out new games which i loved like Resistance: Fall of man, Fight Night Round 3. Resistance at the time of launch was a game that would come with most the bundle offers thats how i managed to get it.

TECHNICAL FEARURES

Here I will be evaluating some sections of the Specifications
Let's start off by talking about the processing unit that the PS3 has.
All i can say about this section is that it may be impressive now but soon it won't be as much, as computers are advancing rapidly now e.g. dual core, quad core games will be maybe 5 times better than the ps3 will be able to show. So if you are one of those people who wants to get the most they can from games then go with PC instead as it is easy to upgrade and games will continue to improve.

The GPU was developed by NVIDIA and Sony, This graphics card is similar to NVIDIA 7800. This tells me that already the pc has a better graphics card than the PS3 as NVIDIA has released 8800 ULTRA and soon will be releasing 9 series. Just makes you wonder how long it will be before Sony decides to make you buy a PS4. My bet is within 3-4 years. So is it worth spending that much money on a PS3 is the life expectancy is not long?

• Storage is important nowadays in every media and PS3 has 40GB, 60GB & 80GB Versions of it. The 60GB and 80GB versions have memory slots as well which you can use to transfer between PS3 and any media. The slots that are available are:

• USB: Front x 4, Rear x 2 (USB2.0)
• Memory Stick: standard/Duo, PRO x 1
• SD: standard/mini x 1
• CompactFlash: (Type I, II) x 1

The USB can be used for Transferring files between PS3 This is probably the main form of Storage, now the best part is you can connect your external USB hard drives to the PS3 so you will have even more storage space. Only problem with this is you will need to format your external hard drive to FAT32 as this is all that the PS3 will read. The bad thing about FAT32 is that each file can not be larger than 4GB.This will be a problem if you want to watch HD videos that you may have on your pc, as a lot of them can be larger than 4GB.
Another useful method is if you have videos on your pc you can set up a media server like I have done and just stream them you your PS3 using wireless network or an Ethernet connection i find this much quicker and easier as i can watch it real-times instead of copying it to a storage.. Popular programs that do this is Nero and Media Player may be others too.

The Memory Stick, SD & ConpactFlash are mediums that you would have used with your mobile phones or digital cameras. This makes it easy for you to copy your favourite pictures, videos & music to the PS3.
Now remember with the PS2 you had memory cards that would run out and take long to save but you could take it to your friends house and use. You still can with the PS3 and now there is much more space with these external mediums you will never need 5 memory cards.I find this useful as sometimes i have some pictures on the phone that i want to share with the whole family, since my PS3 is in the living room thats the best method as you can see it large and it looks so stunning on the HD TV.

Bluetooth is the next thing on the list, that a tough one does no wire for controllers count?

course it does Bluetooth means you will never have to worry about tripping put over the wires. And you can practically play it from as far away as you can see the TV. I've tried using the controller from upstairs and it actually still could detect it. PS3 supports other Bluetooth devices too you are able to do a search on the menu, so if you got a Bluetooth headset you can use that if u want to chat to people when you are playing online.The PS3 SIXASIS is a great controller just like the classic PS1/PS2 the design stayed the same. This is the perfect controller I cannot say anything about the slick design.

As you may know this controller is wireless so you may use it from anywhere in the room so no messy wires hanging around. And the battery lasts very long I don't have to charge it very often but i don't play hours every day either.

Only bad this about this controller is that unlike the PS1/PS2 controllers this does not have dual shock so there is no rumble which is a shame. This is because Sony could not get rights for the technology. Sony what happened?

Well good news this controller is being released again next year as Dual Shock 3 is coming out. So if you want to get additional controllers I recommend you to wait for it to come out as it is a great feature. The feeling for the game is lost without dual shock. Need For Speed didn't feel the same without it the ride felt so smooth and unrealistic.

It also has a great feature called SIXAXIS which was not in previous versions of the Playstation controllers. This works similar to the Nintendo Wii controllers where it is motion sensitive. This currently is not available in all games yet but I do know that it is harder playing like that but with practice it will be just as easy and more enjoyable. I personally do not like to use this feature as i find it much too hard to control but i guess practice makes perfect.

All i can say about this design is "PERFECTION" i have loved this design since PS1 and i hope they never change it.

The PS3 can support up to 7 Bluetooth controllers that's for than enough for me.

If you wish to use it on pc all you have to do is connect the USB cable that you usually use to charge the controller with to your pc. Sony release a firmware every month that fixes bugs and enables new features and these can be acquired through system update. Now there have been some cool development by Sony as they have increased functionality by releasing firmware's that have added DVD/PS1/PS2 upscale. The upscale have been great as the DVDs look much sharper and the games too. Sony has also released a firmware that added themes which is great as you can make it look different to what you like. To get the themes you can either download them from the internet or PS3 store. Future Firmware includes listening to music while playing a game which is currently not possible but due to release hopefully soon. The updates are about 100mb takes me less than 1 minute to download as I have 16mb broadband. But it will vary depending on your location, internet speed and traffic.

Display settings you can choose from the following:
• Screen size: 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i, 1080p
• HDMI: HDMI out x 2
• Analog: AV MULTI OUT x 1

I use HDMI 1080I and 1080p myself but what you choose will depend on your TV and setup. HD would be the best setting to use if you have a HD Ready TV as it displays sharp and vibrant picture.

Network Settings- This is where you where you will have to do the configuration if u want your PS3 to have internet or to share files with another device connected to the network. Once you have entered the correct details you are able to test the connection to make sure everything is working fine, once it is you are ready to go.

Themes- This allows you to change the look of the PS3 interface jus like you do with your PC. Its easy to do, you download the theme on from the internet then place it in a yellow folder with an appropiate folder name so that the PS3 can read it as a theme. The you go to theme in settings then change it to your one. I use Vista theme as it was the best i could find on the internet at the moment but im sure better onse will come soon enough,

There are a lot more other settings I am not going to go in to detail with.

Now the MUSIC/ VIDEO/ PICTURE & GAME section are all similar any media you have saved or inserted to the PS3 will show up in the appropriate sections. IF you wish to put VIDEOS/MUSIC/PICTURE you have to put it in a folder with the appropriate label so that PS3 can read it otherwise it will not show up. Any media servers running will also show up on this section. The Game sections also have saved game data and a Virtual PS1/PS2 memory card so that your PS1/PS2 game data's can be stored. I have my PS3 to auto load disc so when i insert a Game or other media i will not need to go in the the sections it will jus load it up, but some times its annoying because when i leave a game in there and next time i turn on the PS3 instead of going to the main menu it will load the game or dvd streight away.

Next we move on to the NETWORK section this consists of remote play and internet browser as far as Remote play is a feature in which the PS3 can interact with a PSP but I know only game currently out that is capable of using that feature is Formulae One Championship Edition. And Grand Turismo HD will support it when its out. The PSP will be used as a rear mirror to help the gamer play and see what is going on behind at the same time.

We also have the INTERNET BROWSER which is like any other browser we have used on the pc. This one on the PS3 is capable of being able to have to pages at the same time split screen. The only downside to this is that kids may have it in their rooms and be able to access adult pages as no as there are no restrictions on the PS3, parents also may not be aware that kids are able to do this on the PS3. I will not be using this feature as i have a PC and Laptop and i dont have a PS3 keyboard. But i do however think that they have made it relatively easy to use with a controller. When i type a letter on the right site there will be a dictionary and the more letters write the more it narrows the word down so i can jus sellect it from the side instead of typing the whole word out. The downside to this is when i write a password on a site it will save it will show up on the screen. Once you have completed a word it will save it to the dictionary so you will not need to write it out again next time. I have found this very helpful as i dont have to keep typing websites as i do use the browser once in a while.

Next up is the PLAYSTATION NETWORK section this consists of Accounts Management and Playstation store. The Accounts Management will have details about you like Email, Address, Payment details, online profile. These are optional you can enter them if you wish to play online; you will need to have an internet connection for this. It will also have information about things you may have purchased from the Playstation shop so that even if you lose it from your PS3 you can download it again because the system knows you have already paid for it. You can share your account with friends so they can play your games too and its legal too. I think this is a useful feature but i wont be using it, i would prefer to buy my games and have something to show where my money is going aka a disc.

On the Playstation shop you can download Games, Game Demos, Trailers and Videos Demos and Trailers are free so you can try any game you want before you purchase it. I would say this is good but i have reasontly experienced that it is not. As some of you may know Pro Evolution Soccer for th PS3 was not very well developed and there were a lot of slowdowns. Sony was given the demo Weeks before the official release but didn not publish it on Playstation store until sometime after the official realease of the game. They did this because they know PES2008 is a big game and if its not up to scratch they will more PS3 sales from bad reviews of the game.

Finally the last thing on the list is friends, you can add your friends or friends you met in game and you can send them messages like any other messenger. There's an option you can select were it displays the last 50 people that you played with in a game server. It will tell you their id what game you played them on and the time you played them with. There's options to block and delete users too if they get on your nerves or no longer wish to have them on your list.
